When Richard Kielcewski left the Polish Squadron of the RAF at the end of world war II, he along with his British wife Elsie emigrated to South Africa. After a few jobs he was employed by a large electric motor repairer in Durban. After learning his trade he returned to England some years later. He set up a workshop in Market Way, Wembley and worked for many of the engineering companies in the Wembley and Park Royal area of which there were many at that time.
By the sixties the business was well established and is often the case fate takes a hand. A large local plastics factory was moving to Scotland and their electrical maintenance technician (Tony Fletcher) had decided to stay is his native London and was therefore looking for an opportunity to practice his in depth knowledge of controls. Whilst working on machines for a local company he routinely met Richard Kiel (as he was known) and after some discussions they went into partnership and so Kiel and Fletcher was founded. Tony Fletcher quickly became the driving force for expansion and soon the company moved to larger premises in Stonebridge London NW10. The repair shop was rapidly joined by a machine shop carrying out bespoke works and some production runs of specialist products. The biggest change was the rapid growth of contracting division, which specialised in industrial work and carried out prestige works throughout the UK. With the growth of computers, came the need for air conditioning and the associated wiring/controls etc. and for many years this was a large part of the business along with the works for many local companies in all fields from ice-cream through to musical instruments (Lyons Maid & Boosey & Hawkes) In the early eighties Tony Fletcher's son Chris joined the company from Higgins and Cattle Ltd and worked as an electrician and then as supervisor on large contracts including Palace of Westminster and many other prestige works. After establishing a satellite branch in Southampton and Mr Kiel retiring, the company moved back to Wembley and set up opposite the Large GEC site. Soon they were asked to be involved in some large HV cabling modifications on the site and this lead to the offer of larger premises and in 1987 the company moved to the GEC Estate.
Following a spell of heart trouble Tony Fletcher had to hand over more responsibility to Chris and following the recession of the early nineties the decision was made to cease the contracting division and concentrate on motor sales and service. In 1992 K&F Electric Motor Repairs Ltd (as the company was called since Mr Kiel's retirement) became the London Key Distributor for ABB Motors and in 1994 purchased Silverthorn Transmissions Ltd, a local motor and power transmissions specialist distributor.

In 1995 the company was re-named EMR Silverthorn Ltd and has grown steadily. Sadly in 1999 Tony Fletcher passed away and Chris Fletcher has been Managing Director since. The company is now ISO 9002 approved and part of the ABB Motor Service Partner network. We carry the largest stock of ABB motors in the capital and specialise in exports to all countries of the world, sending motors to destinations across most continents. Many other products are exported, from trucks to light fittings and cables etc. and our staff have built a wealth of experience in sourcing those 'hard to find' products.
