IE3 is the second stage of a wider legislation called Energy Saving Performance Standards, or MEPS.  It will become mandatory on 1 January 2015. The standard sets mandatory minimum efficiency levels for electric motors introduced into the European market.

It’s being introduced to combat the massive amount of energy consumed by the large numbers of electric motors in use today. Huge savings could be made in energy and carbon dioxide outputs if we all used more energy efficient motors.

The IE3 standard applies to all newly installed motors, and those in continuous operation, within a power range of 7.5 – 375KW. Eventually the range will be lowered to 0.75 -375KW.

So from 1 January 2015, all IE2 motors must be sold with a drive (VSD) or replaced with IE3 motors.
